Change Your Mind-Set to Better Golf

By: Jeff Gustafson

Why do you make this game so complicated? It doesn’t have to be that way at all. Golf can be broken down to some clear basics and if you just focus on those you just may find yourself wanting to play more often.

And isn’t that really what life is all about?

Think about this: In most sports you are playing your Strategy against someone else’s Strategy which means you are always working against a moving target. In golf, that is not the case.

Your competition is the golf course and nothing else. The other players are there but they are fighting the same battles you are and playing the same golf course. The common denominator is “the golf course”.

But, if you have done your homework correctly, you should know the course inside and out; every bounce; every side hill, up hill, downhill lie and those positions don’t change. Weather can affect getting there and affect the severity of the balls reaction to the ground when it lands but the physical layout of the course itself doesn’t change.

So it stands to reason to know the course inside and out?

Obviously the greens play differently if they are moist or dried out. But the green is still “x” yards wide and “x” yards deep. And the same holds true for the fairways.

Your concern as the golfer playing the course should be what club is going to get you there and what sort of spin or reactions can you expect from the ball once it lands.

Everything else should remain the same. If it is an uphill lie your shoulders will be level with the slope with your weight slightly more on your back foot. Your ball will tend to hook so adjust your aim accordingly and position the ball toward your front heel and then add (1) club to compensate for the trajectory.

Regarding the swing, although psychologically we may think we need to swing more or less aggressively, that is not the case. The golf swing under any conditions is still the same. Just use more or less club and, when necessary, such as in the wind, widen your stance a bit for better balance.

But the key here is if you really know the course, then all you do is make the proper club adjustments depending upon the lie and conditions and make the same smooth swing.

We so often make things far more complicated than they need to be. The golf swing itself is fairly basic. You just need to learn to make that same swing consistently time and time again.

Strategy Golf works and it can improve your game.

Enjoy golf more and start playing more strategically.
