Beginning Golf Is Not as Expensive as You'd Think

By: Richard Pierce-Jones

Golf is often believed to be an expensive sport. In the past it was an elitist game and golf clubs were often incredibly selective over who could be a member and play on their course. Fortunately this testing and skilful game now enjoys much more mass appeal and has fans the world over. Tournaments such as The Open and the Ryder Cup are now major televised sports events and people have a great interest in the sport, prompting many to take to the tees themselves and learn the game.

The myth of golf being an expensive sport often lies in the higher end, expensive golf clubs and equipment that are available. These are not required in order to be a great golfer and in some cases can actually be detrimental for beginners. There are plenty of beginner specific clubs that have specific properties that can help you hit the ball better and are more forgiving with regards to whereabouts on the club face you hit the ball.

A lot of golf shops and sporting goods shops will sell beginner sets or individual clubs. Typically you'll make a better saving when buying a full beginners set which can include a golf bag and other free accessories such as a box of balls or tees to get you started. As you progress to a better standard then you may find that buying more expensive clubs could be the best way to proceed. The best way to save money is to buy clubs individually to replace one in your current set, this way you can gradually upgrade your clubs one by one to help spread the cost.

For those who don't want to buy a full set of clubs, such as those first trying out the sport, it is best to see if you can hire a set of clubs. Some courses will allow you to loan a set of clubs (normally not the full set) for a small deposit to use on the course to get a feel for the game. These clubs may not be in the best condition but you can get an idea of how to play the game.

Also look into getting golf lessons from a professional or tutor at your local course, they'll be able to show you the right way to swing and hit the ball. Some people who start playing golf with no lessons can develop poor habits or incorrect stances that can make playing golf even tougher. Learning the correct swing and stance early on will help you perform better and enjoy progressing at the game of golf.
