The Perfect Round of Golf: It's all In the Head!

By: Richard Pierce-Jones

Golf especially when played competitively can be a very stressful sport, there are countless instances of people's nerves being frayed and the pressure to perform quickly turning a friendly game on a Sunday afternoon into a war of words (often directed at the wayward golf ball). It is understandable and has happened for decades. If you watch any tournament on television or in person then you're guaranteed to see players lose their composure at times, whether this is a sigh or a full-on "throw of the club" mood swing.

The reality of this is that golf requires as much mental ability as it does physical. Our performance on the golf course can often be tied to our mental composure, how relaxed we are, how nervous or anxious we become when taking that 15 foot plus putt. If we do not have the right mindset there is a good chance that these thoughts and emotions can bleed into our ability to hit shots with the right power and direction.

Many golfers will be familiar with common errors that can disappoint them such as the dreaded bunker shot or a sliced tee shot, these shots can frustrate golfers to the point that their concentration breaks and has a disastrous effect on their performance.

Sometimes the mental issues can be as a result of outside interference, a phone going off or your partner dropping their clubs, and if they occur whilst you are mid swing this can really put golfers off and can result in players venting their anger shortly after.

The key thing to remember is to not let a bad shot or any other error get you down, the game of golf is won on points and the odd bad shot is typically made up for with many more clean shots depending on your skill level. Playing each hole as it comes is a better idea than constantly checking the scorecard to see how far behind or ahead you are. If you play like this you are more likely to catch occurrences where you may have made a mistake, notice it and try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Likewise, practicing taking shots with noise in the background can help you channel it out. Tiger Woods' father Earl is famed for making all sorts of noises whilst his son was learning to play golf. This unorthodox training has proven positive as Woods is one of the most focussed players playing professionally in recent years.
