How To Stop Embarrassingly Topping The Ball For Good
By: Joel Kaarla
One common beginner problem that many people start out with is topping the ball. That means that the bottom of your club head hits the top of ball making the ball fly very low or not even leave the ground at all. Many people consider this to be one of the most embarrassing shot types to hit because it makes you look like a beginner. Who would look like they don't know how to golf at the course.
First thing to look at when trying to cure this problem is your ball position. Make sure that it is not either too far back or forward in your stance. By keeping the ball in the wrong position it forces you to compensate that by doing something during your swing that you don't want to do. Try to keep it much at the center spot of your feet unless hitting something like a driver.
Then check your posture. Remember to slightly flex your knees and try to feel pretty relaxed. You should feel relaxed through your whole swing. One thing to watch out for is flexing your knees to much. You might then have to unflex them during your downswing and cause you to rise too much and top the ball that way.
One thing that helps a lot of golfers is to learn how to take a divot with their shots. One practice trick is to place a small coin under your ball and focus on hitting that instead of the ball. This really forces you to focus on hitting the grass after the ball. You can do this without the ball too.
With these tips and some practice you should be able remove top shots from your arsenal. Just keep on practicing and soon you'll amaze your buddies with your nice clean divot shots.
